Walking through Barcelona

Barcelona is a vibrant, colourful city, and until the 1990s it remained a well kept secret among Western European backpackers. The 1992 Olympic Games were an important step in the history of Barcelona; today folks come from all corners of the globe to visit.

This city holds fantastic history, art, music and cuisine, social and culturally offering something for everybody to experience. Marvel at Barcelona’s modernist architecture, stroll around the museums and roam the streets of its old quarter. No-one should come here and miss the creations of Antonio Gaudi, visitors can further indulge by spending time admiring the works of Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró. Weather it is day or midnight, Barcelona’s famed boulevard La Rambla presents a never-ending stream of musicians, artists and street performers – non-stop entertainment. La Rambla runs through the heart of the old city down to the harbour. At the mid part of Les Rambles, there is the market of La Boqueria. Get inside, taste some tapas and let yourself submerge in another world!

Take walks around the medieval quarter Gothic neighbourhood, with the serene cathedral in its centre. Each Sunday at noon crowds of older and younger people gather in front of the cathedral to dance the Catalan National Dance, La Sardana. Also in the Barrio Gothic there is the very well known square Plaza Reial, very central, just off La Rambla. It is popular for all age groups as s summer night hangout and a good meeting point before you head out clubbing.
For party people, searching for the right place to go, it’s a spot where many people hand out flyers – often offering discount or free entry.

The other side of Les Rambles is called El Raval Neighbourhood. Here is where our 3 Hostels are. This is an area it has a very strong personality. The typical old grandma on the balcony, the young artist taking the walls to express, the small hairdresser and the very cool and fashionable club is the mix here. In the neighbourhood there is the Museum of Contemporary Art of the city that is also the point where all the skaters gather to play around. Barcelona has become very much famous for them as like they say it has fantastic spots to practice! Also Las Ramblas del Raval a very curious place with many little terrace to enjoy a beer when is hot at night! La Paloma is the oldest and the coolest disco in Barcelona and it is also there. Is the red club! The Apolo is also a classic of the neighbourhood. The London Bar with its life music and the bar Marsella are very known specially for the travellers. On the last one, the smell of the absent and the years passing by tell you that this is a perfect place to start discovering El Raval.

For having a look at the new face of Barcelona stroll around the waterfront, there you can cross the bridge until the one of Europe’s best aquariums. If you continue walking though the beaches of la Barceloneta, you will find el Port Olímpic with lost of restaurant and boats. And also further away there is the Forum area, the newest of the city, where very new buildings right next to the sea, hold many cultural activities!!

Many of Barcelona’s finest modernist buildings are located along Passeig de Gracia in L´Eixample. Don’t miss a visit to Gaudi´s spectacular Sagrada Familia & Parc Güell.

East of Gothic neighbourhood there is the Museu Picasso housed in a medieval mansion, the beautiful church Santa Maria del Mar, the incredible Palau de la Música and the recently opened Market of Santa Caterina, that is admired for everybody for its colours and beauty..

As well as being perfect for a picnic or walk, Park Ciutadella has some specific attractions, for example the monumental waterfall, a combination of statuary, rock and greenery and a Zoo. Also it holds a good collection of 19/20th century Catalan art. On Sunday’s in particular the park is crowded with people of all ages, many youngsters juggling, jamming and having fun. Once or twice a year the Earth festival (April) is an insider highlight, with many stalls, music and workshops.

Another stunning feature of Barcelona is the mountain of Montjuic, the hill overlooking the city from the south-west is home of many museums, the famous colourful fountain, the mythic Montjuic Castle and most of the Olympic Stadiums. Wonderful parks invite to spend the day rather quieter, with great views and greenery.

Tibidabo is the highest hill in the wooden range that forms the backdrop to Barcelona. It is a good place for long walks along winding roads, some fresh air and, if the sky is clear, a 70 km view will stun your eyes. The old fun park, leave your imagination to fly and bring memories to all the inhabitants of Barcelona.

Coming back to the centre of the city, the heart of it, it’s Plaça Catalunya. Give the pigeons there a bit of your sandwich, drink a bit of water from the fountain of Canaletes (that means you will be back to the city), and give a little coin to a street artist that will make you smile, and so on.
Just let yourself go with the city!!!
We hope you a have a wonderful adventure in our city!! Welcome!!
